Vol. 228 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Walkinstown (Dublin) Traffic Hazards.

29.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he has been able to find a solution to the traffic hazards at Walkinstown Cross, Dublin.

The question of finding a solution to the traffic situation at Walkinstown Cross is a matter, in the first instance, for Dublin County Council, consulting, where necessary, with the Commissioner of the Garda Síochána. As I intimated in reply to recent questions on the subject, the council have experienced certain difficulties in relation to acquisition of the necessary land which have prevented them from implementing their full proposals for the improvement of this junction. In particular I would refer the Deputy to my replies to questions on the subject on 7th and 14th March last. I understand from the county council that the necessary consent of Dublin Corporation to the subdivision of the plots has now been received and that the council is proceeding for completion of title to the lands on terms already negotiated. Work on an interim scheme which will afford relief at the location pending implementation of the full roundabout proposal is at present in progress.

The improvement of public lighting will form an integral part of the measures being taken to reduce traffic hazards at this location. I have had a special examination made by An Foras Forbartha into the county council's proposals in this regard and hope to communicate with the council thereon at a very early date.

On account of the extreme danger that exists at this crossing especially for schoolchildren, has the Minister been able to persuade his colleague, the Minister for Justice, to ensure that members of the Garda are on duty there during certain hours when children must cross?

That question should have been addressed to the Minister for Justice.

I understood the Minister was making representations to his colleague on this matter.

The question did not relate to that matter.
