Vol. 228 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - University College, Galway.

48.

asked the Minister for Education if there are any plans before his Department for the expansion of accommodation and facilities in University College, Galway; and, if so, when it is planned that work on these schemes will commence.

Mr. O'Malley

Schedules of accommodation for a new building at University College, Galway, for chemistry, experimental physics and biochemistry and for a new library and cafeteria are being examined in my Department and questions concerning them have been discussed with the college authorities.

I am not yet in a position to say when a final decision on these matters may be taken.

Could the Minister give any estimate of the future cost of the works involved?

Mr. O'Malley

I certainly could not.

Now we know where somebody stands in the split anyway.

Question No. 49.

I agree with the Minister.

Mr. O'Malley

These interruptions should cease.

Question No. 49.

49.

asked the Minister for Education if he will make a statement on the future role of University College, Galway in higher education in Ireland; and if it is intended to implement any of the suggestions contained in the report of the Commission on Higher Education to that College.

Mr. O'Malley

Pending publication of the full report of the Commission on Higher Education and its subsequent examination and consideration by all interested parties, I am not in a position to make any statement on this matter.
