Vol. 228 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Allotment of Land.

27.

asked the Minister for Lands if the Land Commission may take over a small holding and then give that same holding to a small farmer whose land adjoins it; or if an acquired farm must be divided.

The determination of lands to be acquired and the selection of allottees are matters reserved exclusively to the Commissioners and decisions must necessarily be governed by the particular circumstances of individual cases. While the Land Commission may, in some particular given situation, acquire a small property and allot it to an individual local congest, it is not a practice which normally prevails. Generally it can be said that it would not be suggestive of a balanced sense of priorities for the Land Commission to interest themselves in units, the beneficial effect of which could not extend beyond a single smallholder.

Could the Parliamentary Secretary say how many plots or holdings are taken over by the Land Commission and given to individuals without being divided?

It would be impossible for me to say that. Normally, the Land Commission do not acquire land for the purpose of allotting it to an individual.

My information is that very rarely is land acquired for the purpose of accommodating an individual.

That is so.
