Vol. 228 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Payment of Social Welfare Benefit.

40.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he is aware that a person (particulars supplied) who has five young children has been in bad health since March 1962; that his social welfare payment of £7 2s 6d per week was discontinued on 8th August, 1966; and that this man is now in very bad circumstances as he has no income; and if he will have this case investigated as a matter of urgency with a view to restoring payment to this man immediately.

Payment of disability benefit was made in this case from March, 1962, to August, 1966. Payment was discontinued from 8th August, 1966, when a medical referee expressed the opinion that the claimant was capable of work. The claimant appealed against the decision and he was examined by a second medical referee who also expressed the opinion that he was capable of work. Following an oral hearing of the appeal and subsequent examination by a specialist the appeals officer has decided the appeal in favour of the appellant and payment of benefit is being resumed forthwith with effect from 8th August, 1966.
