Vol. 228 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Clonmel Houses.

23.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state the up-to-date position with regard to a proposal from Clonmel Corporation to erect a scheme of new houses at College Street, River Street, Clonmel, County Tipperary.

I understand from Clonmel Corporation that tenders for this scheme are at present being considered by them.

24.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware of the dissatisfaction which exists among the 44 families who entered into an agreement with the National Building Agency Limited to purchase houses at Gurtmalogue, Clonmel because (a) the purchase price agreed upon was increased by not less than £50, and (b) access back passages are not being provided for a large number of tenants thus causing great inconvenience, especially to car owners; and if he will exempt these new home providers from the payment of £50 extra which many cannot afford and provide uniform access for all tenants.

I understand that the increases in the cost of these houses arose from the operation of a price variation clause in the building contract which was incorporated in the legal agreements entered into by the applicants. I am not empowered to act in the manner suggested by the Deputy in regard to the extras arising, which are mainly due to the implementation of the £1 a week increase labour award over which the Agency had no control.

Access back passages were omitted for reasons of economy. I am informed, however, that the plans provide for car parking areas between each block of four houses.
