21.

(Cavan) asked the Minister for Local Government the total amount collected in motor vehicle taxation in each of the past three years; and how each year's collection was allocated.

The total amounts of motor licence duty including driving licences, fees and fines under the Roads Act, 1920, and the Road Traffic Act, 1961, collected and lodged to the Exchequer during the three years ended 31st March, 1967, were:

Year

Amount

£000's

1964-65

8,801

1965-66

9,575

1966-67 (Provisional)

The entire amount was lodged to the Road Fund in 1964-65 and 1965-66. In 1966-67 £9,215,000 was lodged to the Road Fund and £1,211,000 was retained in the Exchequer. The sums lodged to the Road Fund were used fully to meet commitments of the fund in respect of administrative expenses and grants to local authorities for road works.
