Vol. 228 No. 15

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Indebtedness of Local Authorities.

5.

asked the Minister for Local Government the total indebtedness of all local authorities in the Republic as at 31st March, 1966; and what figure this represents per head of the population.

The total net indebtedness of all local authorities, excluding harbour authorities, vocational education committees and committees of agriculture, at 31st March, 1966, is estimated at £195.25 million or £67.78 per head of the population.

Is the Minister aware that I got a reply about a month ago stating that the total indebtedness of local authorities was £209 million. That was at the latest available date.

This was 31st March, 1966.

There is something wrong somewhere in the figures.

I do not think the Deputy was here a month ago.

He was, just about.

The same reply was given on 17th May to Deputy L'Estrange. Of course, Deputy L'Estrange may not have been here then, but the figures he was given then were the same as those given today.

No. I have had a reply since saying it was £209 million.

Probably a different question was asked. The figure of £109 million is in respect of municipal authorities. Maybe that is what the Deputy is thinking of.
