Vol. 229 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Telephone Kiosks.

6.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if, in order to facilitate the people of the Fíor Ghaeltacht of Rannafast, Annagry, County Donegal, and the students attending the Irish college there, he will have a telephone kiosk erected in the area.

The existing facilities in the area are considered adequate and a kiosk is not warranted at present.

7.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs whether he will arrange to have a telephone kiosk provided at Nurney, County Kildare, as the only public telephone at present in the area is in the local supermarket which is not available to the public after 6 p.m., on half days or on Sundays.

A kiosk in this village would not be warranted. Access to the public telephone in the post office is not confined to business hours.

8.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he is aware that in the town of Drogheda the housing estates situated at Scarlet Street, Francis Street, Thomas Street, Palace Street, Chord Road area, Greenhills and North Strand are inadequately served by public telephone kiosks; what he proposes to do about the matter; and when.

9.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he is aware that in the town of Drogheda the housing estates situated at Bothar Bruagh, Pearse Park, Hardmans Gardens, Yellowbatter and Lourdes Square are inadequately served by public telephone kiosks; what he proposes to do about the matter; and when.

10.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he is aware that no public telephone kiosk has been installed in the Marian Park housing estate in Drogheda despite the fact that this estate has been in existence for approximately 12 years; and when he intends to have this unsatisfactory position rectified and to have at least one telephone kiosk set up in a suitable location.

11.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when he proposes to erect sufficient public kiosks in the housing areas of the town of Drogheda, having regard to the fact that in the town there are only four public telephone kiosks situated outside the main shopping areas of the town and the railway station.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 8, 9, 10 and 11 together.

There are ten kiosks in Drogheda which together with three public telephones in the post office adequately serve the areas mentioned in the questions. Three of the kiosks were erected only last year. The position in all areas is reviewed regularly and new installations are provided as necessary. The need for additional public telephones in Drogheda will be examined again later this year when the 1968 kiosk programme is being prepared.
