Vol. 229 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Corporation Housing Stock.

12.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether any review of the stock of Dublin Corporation housing has taken place with a view to closing present substandard accommodation and offering tenants appropriate accommodation.

I understand from Dublin Corporation that they keep their housing stock under constant review, that they accept the necessity for the replacement, as soon as practicable, of any dwellings which may be below present day standards in accommodation and amenities, but that they are not yet in a position to consider any general replacement of such dwellings. They hope, however, to be in a position to accelerate the process of de-tenanting these dwellings in the next few years, having regard to the substantial increase in the number of dwellings which is expected to become available for the rehousing of persons on their approved waiting list.

Is the Minister aware that within the past week at least one of these centres of substandard accommodation, known, perhaps, to the majority of the citizens of this city as Keogh Barracks, has become very dangerous and has been condemned by the corporation? In the light of the fact that this building is obviously decayed, will he take such steps as are open to him to ensure that minimum alternative accommodation is made available to the maximum number of people living in this hovel, for that is what it is, and I invite him to take an opportunity, when he is passing by, to go in and have a look at it?

I understand that the corporation accept the desirability of replacing many of these older dwellings and that Keogh Square will be a priority in any such replacement scheme.
