Vol. 229 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Use of Term “Old Age Pension”.

30.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will consider introducing legislation to change the term "old age pension" to that of retirement security pension or some such similar term.

Since retirement is not a prerequisite for the receipt of old age pension, I am unable to do as the Deputy suggests.

Would the Minister agree that the term "old age pension" smacks of the victorian era and charity rather than entitlement and, in view of the rationalisation of terms like this with our possible entry into the Common Market, would he consider an alternative title to the term "old age pension"?

People still grow old.

There is nothing undignified in old age. It is the term I am after.

One would think of other terms but that which they call a rose by any other name——

Would smell as sweet.

"Assistance" would not look too good and one cannot apply the term "retirement".
