Vol. 229 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Cavan Kiosks.

7.

(Cavan) asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will provide a public telephone without delay at Ricehill, Cavan, where a post office was recently closed.

As very little use was made of the call office telephone prior to the closure of the sub-office the provision of a kiosk in the area would not be justified, but a coinbox telephone which will be available for use by the public is being installed in a local shop.

(Cavan): When will the installation take place?

It is actually going on at present.

(Cavan): Is it at Brady's shop which is a short distance from Ricehill?

Where does the local Fianna Fáil Cumann secretary live?

8.

(Cavan) asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will provide a public telephone kiosk at Treehoo Cross, Redhills, County Cavan, which is in the centre of a thickly populated area and is some miles from a public telephone.

A kiosk is not warranted in this area.

(Cavan): On what grounds does the Parliamentary Secretary think that a kiosk is not warranted in the area?

No votes.

In this question, the Deputy described it as a thickly populated area. My information is that that is not so.

(Cavan): It is about a few hundred yards from a polling booth at which over 400 people vote. Would the Parliamentary Secretary accept that as evidence that it is a fairly thickly populated area?

I will accept that as the reason for the question this week but I cannot accept it as sufficient evidence of the population in the Treehoo Cross area.

(Cavan): Will the Parliamentary Secretary make inquiries in respect of this area? It would appear from his answer that he is not aware of the density of the population there.

My information is that the Treehoo Cross area is thinly populated and that there is no concentration of houses there at all. There is a call office within a little over one and a half miles from the place. I am sure the polling station the Deputy talks about takes in people from that area as well.

9.

(Cavan) asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will provide a telephone kiosk at Castlerahan, Crossroads, Ballyjamesduff, County Cavan without delay, in view of the fact that the post office at that address has been closed down and that the nearest public telephone is four miles away.

As very little use was made of the public telephone in the former post office, a kiosk is not considered to be warranted in the area. There is a public telephone within 2 miles and two others within 3 miles of Castlerhan.
