asked the Minister for Education whether university science departments in this country are in receipt of grants from the US Defence Department; and if he will indicate which topics form the objects of their researches.

As the reply is in the form of a tabular statement, I propose, with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, to circulate it with the Official Report.

Following is the statement:

Physics: Study of large cosmic ray showers using (a) the clerenhov radiation from the showers and (b) radio pulses from showers mainly at large zenith angles.

Chemistry: Transport of Energy in Irradiated Systems.

University College, Cork.

Physics: (a) The lambda method for boundary value problems.

(b) Plates with polygonal or curved boundaries with holes.

Engineering: Micro-wave studies of ionizing phenomena in gaseous discharges (for satellite communications systems).

Physics: Microwave spectroscopy in the millimetre region.

Trinity College, Dublin.

(i) Chemistry: Cationic polymerisation.

(ii) Engineering (a) Research in dynamic testing of soil.

(b) Solid State Physics—Pressure dependence on the dielectric properties of the alkali halides.

(iii) Zoology: Biochemistry and physiology of rhythmical behaviour in marine animals.
