Vol. 230 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Houses for Commercial Travellers.

29.

asked the Minister for Local Government if a commercial traveller can secure housing accommodation under the Housing of the Working Classes Acts.

The Housing Act, 1966, eliminated the former classification of "working classes" in relation to local authority housing. Authorities are now required to have regard primarily to need for housing. In the letting of their dwellings, they are required to observe specified statutory priorities, subject to which it is open to them to provide accommodation for any class of person. Normally they do not rehouse persons whose circumstances are such that they may reasonably be expected to provide their own accommodation.
