Vol. 230 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Distribution of Antibiotics.

153.

asked the Minister for Health if his attention has been drawn to a report (particulars supplied) in which it is alleged that a concern, with a Dublin address is distributing antibiotics in Britain in containers on which the labels do not accurately describe the contents; if there is such a concern at the address stated distributing medicines; if this concern has distributed medicines to his Department or to local health authorities; if there is any check on the quality of the medicines supplied; and if he will make a statement on the situation.

154.

asked the Minister for Health whether he has taken steps to investigate the marketing by a Dublin firm of a drug (details supplied) with a very close similarity in brand name to a widely used drug produced by another laboratory although the drugs were significantly different; whether he has issued a warning to the medical and pharmaceutical professions; and what steps he has taken to prevent the use of brand names likely to cause confusion and risk of danger to health.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 153 and 154 together.

I have seen the report referred to in the first of these two questions which, as mentioned in that question, relates to the distribution of a certain preparation in Britain, not in this country. There is a concern at the address stated, distributing medicines.

This firm has not been on the list of official contractors under the Local Authorities (Combined Purchasing) Act, 1939, in the last two years. Prior to 30th June, 1965, it was for a period on that list for the supply of some items of drugs and medicines to local authorities. During that period, a number of the products supplied were tested and when one of these was found to be deficient directions were issued to cease the supply of that product and to withdraw any stocks issued.

As inquiries I am making into the matter generally are not yet complete, it would be premature for me at this stage to make any further statement.
