Vol. 230 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Sligo Post Office.

3.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if it is the policy of his Department to close sub-post offices in rural areas; if he is prepared to recommend the re-opening of Killaville post office, County Sligo, which was closed following the death of the sub-postmaster; and if he will ensure that a public telephone and an efficient letter-box collection will be maintained there.

Rural sub-post offices are closed only when insufficient use is made of them to warrant their retention. The re-opening of the sub-post office at Killaville would not be justified because the amount of post office business transacted there was trivial. The provision of public telephone facilities at Killaville would not be warranted having regard to the small use made of the post office telephone prior to its closure. A letter-box has been provided and the collection service has not been affected by the closure of the office.
