Vol. 230 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cahirciveen Pier.

6.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries whether Bord Iascaigh Mhara with his sanction sold or leased part of the pier at Cahirciveen, County Kerry so that there is no public access to the pier and to the cradles for the fishing boats which were built over a year ago at a cost of £8,000.

An Bord Iascaigh Mhara bought from Córas Iompair Éireann the disused railway site at Cahirciveen and gave a lease of it for development of local sea angling. The Board did not seek my permission to do so nor was such permission necessary.

I understand from the Board that public access to the pier and access to the laying-up bars for fishing boats has not at any time been restricted by the present lessee of the former railway site. When apprehension about this was expressed locally the lessee immediately agreed to clarify the matter by surrendering back to the Board an appropriate part of the site and the Board in turn arranged with Kerry County Council that they would transfer that part of the property to the council. The necessary legal documents to effect the conveyances are at present being prepared and the transfer to the council is expected to be completed shortly.

Would the Minister give the name of the lessee in this case?

He is a Mr. Wadham.
