Vol. 230 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Supplementary Housing Grants.

18.

asked the Minister for Local Government if a native of Dublin city proposing to buy a house in County Dublin will in future receive a supplementary grant.

I understand that, at its meeting on 9th October, Dublin County Council approved, in principle, of a proposal to pay supplementary new house grants to qualified persons from Dublin city building or buying houses in the county. Details of the revised scheme of grants are being worked out by the authority.

I may add that on 20th October I sanctioned a proposal of the authority to borrow £100,000 to finance the revised scheme when it is put into operation by them.

Could the Minister indicate from what date this arrangement will apply?

I do not know. As I understand the situation, a revised scheme is still being worked out and presumably as soon as that is settled, a date will be fixed.

Could it be taken that the people who set about indulging in this exercise will receive a supplementary grant?

I could not say that. The position is that a draft scheme has been submitted to the county council housing committee. When the committee decides on the scheme to be undertaken it will be put before the council but I could not say what the operative date will be.

Could the Minister indicated approximately how long it will take to finalise this whole business?

I believe the next meeting of the full council is on 13th November and I imagine it will be finalised by then.

Will anybody who is affected be able to benefit by that?

It is a matter for the council.

If the decision is made then, will they?

They will know the operative date, yes.

As I have been informed this afternoon that the Corporation now intend to make an offer of alternative accommodation to those people, I would like to withdraw Question No. 19.

Quick action.

The Department of Local Government have been doing a good job.

The power of the Parliamentary Question.

Question No. 19 withdrawn.
