Vol. 230 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cork Airport Development.

10.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power when radar equipment will be installed at Cork Airport; if he will make a statement on the matter, and if he has plans for the greater development of the Airport.

There are already adequate landing aids, including an instrument landing system on the main runway, at Cork Airport to comply with the standards laid down by the International Civil Aviation Organisation. Radar is an ancillary aid used in conjunction with the landing aids, primarily by the Air Traffic Control Service, to locate approaching aircraft. It is intended to provide a radar system at the airport and I hope to be in a position to invite tenders for its installation shortly. Manufacture and installation of the equipment will take about a year.

The airport is adequate for present traffic and can be expanded, as required, to meet future traffic growth.

Any time in the next five years will be time enough.
