Vol. 230 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Urban Rates.

24.

andMr. Gilhawley asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware of the hardship being imposed on urban and town dwellers by the continuous increase in rates; and what steps he proposes to take to rectify the position.

The Government's recognition of the need for a comprehensive review of the system of local finance and taxation has led to the initiation of the present investigations by an interdepartmental committee into those matters. While the committee has furnished two reports, which have been made available to the public, and investigations into other aspects of the system are well advanced, the stage has not yet been reached where comprehensive proposals for any necessary changes in the system can be formulated.
