Vol. 230 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Registered Apprentices.

39.

asked the Minister for Labour the number of apprentices at present registered with An Chomhairle Oiliúna; the number who gained apprenticeships this year; and the number who are qualified apprentices and have failed to obtain a position.

I am informed by An Chomhairle Oiliúna that the number of apprentices at present registered with them is 12,500, and that the number who gained apprenticeship since 1st January, 1967 is 1,380. The information sought by the Deputy in the last part of his question is not available to An Chomhairle.

Is the Minister stating that no record is kept of the number of apprentices who have qualified to secure employment?

They have not that information.

They just do not keep any record at all.

Would the Minister not consider it advisable to set about obtaining the information, having regard to the fact that intending apprentices are on the register? Surely it is the job of the Comhairle to have this information?

I will see if there is any way this matter could be more tightly covered. I feel sure it would be difficult to say how many apprentices do not get suitable employment—people go away and go into other types of employment. I will see if it can be administered a little more tightly.
