asked the Minister for Finance if, as a result of the British bank rate increase from 5½ per cent to 6 per cent, the Irish Banks Standing Committee plan any increase in this country; if he has had consultations with them; if so, with what result; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I have been informed by the Irish Banks Standing Committee that the banks have decided to make no change in the deposit or lending rates here following the recent increase in the British bank rate.
