Vol. 231 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Driving Test for Ex-Army Men.

4.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware that members of the Defence Forces returning to civilian life who are anxious to take up employment as lorry drivers must undergo the driving test, even though these men have driven trucks in the Congo and Cyprus while on peace-keeping service; and if he will take appropriate steps to exempt such men from the necessity to undergo a driving test.

I would refer the Deputy to my reply to Questions Nos. 43 and 44 on 18th April last. As I stated on that occasion, I do not propose to make any exceptions to the rule that a person seeking a driving licence must have held one in the preceding five years or have passed the driving test.
