Vol. 231 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Cork Speed Limit.

5.

asked the Minister for Local Government if the 30 mph speed limit in the village of Ladysbridge, Cork, was removed; if as mentioned in the Department's letter of 16th June, 1967, to the county council there is a draft regulation on the matter; if he is aware that this village is situated at the junction of five roads all leading to popular seaside resorts; and that there have been many protests by the Irish Countrywomen's Association and by the local parish priest about the danger there; and if he will have the speed limit re-introduced.

The speed limit of 30 mph in the village of Ladysbridge, Cork, has not been removed. A proposal to de-restrict the village was included in draft amending regulations forwarded to the county engineer on 16th June last for his comments. This was done as part of the policy of the current general review of speed limits. No final decision has been made in the matter and I will give full consideracedin tion to the Deputy's representations when amending speed limits regulations for County Cork are being made.

I should like to point out to the Minister that I had included in the question "on whose advice this was done". Now we have from the Department of Local Government——

The Deputy may not make a speech. He may ask a question.

I am not making a speech. I am asking a question. On whose advice was this done?

It has not been done.

I wish to point out to the Minister that I can read for him the reply given to me by the county engineer for Cork county.

Deputies

Chair.

The Deputy should know that it is not in Order to read documents at Question Time.

Very well, Sir. The county engineer for Cork county has declared that, if questioned, he could truthfully say that the signs should be retained in that village for the safety of public life. Now we have in the Department a public safety week which costs some thousands of pounds and a public safety advertisement.

The Deputy is making a speech. He may not do so.

The county engineer——

I am calling Question No. 6.

Can I have any reply from the Minister on that?

The Deputy got the reply that what he said has been done has not been done.

And will not be done as far as I am concerned.
