Vol. 231 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Payment of Social Welfare Benefits.

36.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will make arrangements whereby persons living in rural areas who are entitled to unemployment benefit and assistance shall receive payment not later than Friday each week.

Payment of unemployment assistance and unemployment benefit is made on the Thursday and Friday, respectively, of each week to persons who reside within six miles of a local office and attend there for payment. Persons residing over six miles from a local office are not required to attend there either in pursuit of their claims or to receive payment. They claim through the post and are paid through post offices and I am satisfied that Saturday is the earliest day practicable for payment to be made in their cases.
