Vol. 231 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Corporation Resident Caretakers.

28.

asked the Minister for Local Government why resident caretakers are not employed in a number of Corporation flat schemes in Dublin for the convenience of the tenants; and the number of resident caretakers under Dublin Corporation.

The management and control of houses and other land owned by a housing authority is by law vested in the authority who have discretion as to whether or not to employ resident caretakers.

In so far as Dublin Corporation is concerned, I am informed that the practice of appointing resident caretakers for schemes of flats was discontinued in 1950 because they considered that it did not offer any special advantages. Since 1950, resident caretakers have been replaced, as vacancies arose, by non-resident attendants whose duties are generally similar to those performed by the caretakers. The number of resident caretakers at present employed by the Corporation is five, in addition to 82 attendants or non-resident caretakers and 11 housing welfare officers.
