Vol. 231 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Castlebar and Athlone Housing.

31.

asked the Minister for Local Government the present housing requirements of Castlebar and Athlone, including the number of persons living in overcrowded insanitary conditions; the nature of proposals to satisfy such housing requirements; and when they will be fully implemented.

I am informed by the housing authority that there is an accumulated need for 35 private and local authority houses in Castlebar, including 15 for families living in unfit dwellings or in overcrowded conditions. A scheme of 24 local authority houses is at present under construction.

According to a provisional assessment submitted by Athlone Urban District Council there is an accumulated need for 137 local authority dwellings, including 85 for families in unfit dwellings or in overcrowded conditions. Approval in principle has been given by me to a scheme of 350 local authority dwellings, the first section of which comprises 168 dwellings, and is at an advanced stage of planning.

32.

asked the Minister for Local Government the total number of houses in (a) Castlebar and (b) Athlone.

The total number of dwellings in the urban districts of Castlebar and Athlone is estimated, on the basis of the Census taken on the 9th April, 1961, and the number of houses built and demolished since then, at approximately 1,000 and 2,200, respectively.
