Vol. 231 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Sale of Packet Soup.

43.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware that a parcel containing a brand of packet soup (name supplied) sent by a person in England (particulars supplied) to her old age pensioner parents in Sligo, was returned to sender because it was alleged that the soup contained meat product; and that this brand of packet soup manufactured in England is on sale in this country; and if he will make a statement on the matter indicating if in fact this soup does contain meat product.

The parcel in question which arrived by post from Great Britain, contained, inter alia, some packets of oxtail soup the importation of which is prohibited In accordance with the standing arrangements, therefore, the parcel was returned immediately to the sender and the addressee was notified of the action taken.

I am satisfied that this soup contained meat product.

Oxtail soup of the brand in question has in the past been imported in bulk, in the form of soup mix, for packing for sale in this country and these bulk importations were admitted under licence granted by the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries. In the present emergency conditions, however, the issue of such licences has been suspended.
