Vol. 231 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Undeveloped Land.

13.

andMr. Cluskey asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state, in respect of south Dublin city and county, the location and size of undeveloped land that could be utilised for building rented houses and flats for working class families, the cause of the delay in developing such land; and what action he proposes to have taken to ensure that such land will be immediately developed for this purpose.

The drainage schemes proposed by Dublin Corporation and Dublin County Council to service the areas south and south-west of the city are, principally, the Dodder Valley, Grand Canal, and Shanganagh Schemes. The Dodder Valley scheme will serve areas immediately south of the city as far as Templeogue, and subsequent extensions will provide drainage for Holylands, Rathfarnham, Tallaght, and Baldonnel. The Grand Canal scheme is intended to provide for parts of the city in which the drainage facilities are overloaded, and also to serve areas in the south, south-west, and west of the city, including Clondalkin, Lucan, and Blanchardstown. The Shanganagh scheme will serve the Carrickmines area and areas generally to the south-east of the city.

It is not possible at this stage to give an indication of the amount of undeveloped land that could be utilised for the purpose of building houses and flats for working class families when these sewerage facilities are available.

I have already arranged with the local authorities concerned that they will undertake the provision of sufficient drainage as a matter of urgency to ensure that house building will not be impeded.
