Vol. 232 No. 1

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Memorial to Merchant Seamen.

36.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if it is proposed to erect a memorial to the merchant seamen who lost their lives during the war years; and, if so, what form the memorial will take.

As I announced on 25th January, a State contribution of £2,000 is being made to the Maritime Institute of Ireland towards providing a memorial to the seamen who lost their lives on Irish ships during the Emergency.

I understand that the memorial will take the form of a special room in the Institute's new headquarters at Earlsfort Terrace, which will contain a memorial plaque and a Golden Book in which will be inscribed an account of each seaman which may be read by the relatives and the general public.
