Vol. 232 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Secondary School Holidays.

45.

asked the Minister for Education if, in order to facilitate the harmonious working of the new post-primary education scheme and to provide for economy in the travelling expenses of students boarding at secondary schools, he will ensure, as far as possible, that such schools in a particular region will open and close for the annual holidays on a fixed date.

Mr. O'Malley

I agree with the Deputy that it would be in the interests of the harmonious working of the post-primary education scheme and of economy in transport costs if the schools in each post-primary centre were to open and close for holiday periods on the same dates. This is primarily a matter for the managers and principal teachers of the schools concerned. I circulated all post-primary schools some time ago asking them to come together in each centre with a view to making arrangements on the lines suggested by the Deputy.
