Vol. 232 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Garda Pensions.

51.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will take steps to provide an increase in the pensions of gardaí who retired prior to or during 1960; and if he will increase pensions of widows of gardaí.

The pensions of gardaí who retired before or during 1960 have been increased on a number of occasions since then, with the result that, in the typical case of a garda who retired on full pension early in 1960, the total increase in pension has been 42 per cent, that is, from £263 to £374 a year.

The pensions of Garda widows have been increased likewise and, in addition, the minimum widow's pension has been increased from £59 in 1960 to the current rate of £150 a year.

The question of further increases in Garda pensions will be considered by the Minister for Finance in the context of any general revision of public service pensions.
