Vol. 232 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Condition of Royal Canal.

2.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if he is aware that the Royal Canal between Binn's Bridge and Newcomen Bridge, Dublin is at present filled with refuse of all kinds; what check is maintained on the state of the canal; and whether steps will be taken to clear up the present insanitary condition of the canal which is a danger to public health and a nuisance to householders.

I am informed by CIE that the section of the Royal Canal between Binn's Bridge and Newcomen Bridge is not, as suggested by the Deputy, at present filled with refuse of all kinds and it is not in an insanitary condition or a danger to public health. There are small quantities of rubbish in that section of the canal at present which will be cleared away by CIE in due course.

The Royal Canal is inspected regularly by CIE and arrangements are made to clear away rubbish from time to time.

I do not know whether the nostrils of CIE are as strong as those who live along the banks of the canal but the "small quantity" of debris is, in fact, quite large. What does the Minister mean when he says "in due course"? Is there a regular check-up?

There is a regular check-up. If the Deputy feels that CIE have underestimated the present state of the rubbish, which will be removed in due course, I will ask them to examine it again.

Do CIE do this at regular intervals?

When was it last done?

I am afraid I have not got that information.
