Vol. 233 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions Oral Answers. - Local Authority Borrowings.

35.

asked the Minister for Local Government the amount borrowed by local authorities during the period 1957 to 1967, and the amount of interest paid thereon.

The total amount borrowed, other than by means of temporary overdraft, by all local authorities, excluding harbour authorities, vocational education committees and committees of agriculture, in the period from the 1st April, 1957 to the 31st March, 1967, is estimated at £128.06 million. While particulars of the interest payable in respect of that borrowing are not available separately in my Department, the amount of interest paid on all outstanding debt increased from £5.6 million in respect of the year ended the 31st March, 1957, to £10.8 million in respect of the year ended the 31st March, 1967.
