Vol. 233 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Airport Runways.

1.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power (a) if it is proposed to build additional runways at Dublin Airport, and, if so, when it is estimated that work will begin on these runways; (b) what is the present area of the Airport, and what will be the area at full development; (c) how much of the land required for the new development is at present in the possession of his Department, and how much remains to be purchased; and (d) when residents and landowners in the area will know exactly where they stand regarding this development.

The information requested at (a), (b), (c) and (d) of the Deputy's question is as follows:— (a) It is proposed to construct a new runway in an east/west direction and approximately on the line of an existing runway. It may also be necessary to construct, at a later stage, a further runway parallel to and south of the first if it is demanded by the growth of air traffic. Planning of the first new runway is in progress but no decision has yet been taken as to when it will be constructed; (b) and (c) the present area of the Minister's lands at the airport is about 1,300 acres. For the full development of the airport it may ultimately be necessary to double this area; (d) some of the residents and landowners affected have already been approached and the others will be notified as soon as the lands which will be affected have been precisely determined.
