Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Decimal Currency.

37.

asked the Minister for Finance if, in view of the vital importance to industry and particularly to those industries involved in exports, a decision will be arrived at regarding decimal currency at an early date, especially in view of the United Kingdom's plans for the introduction of their system; and if he will make a general statement on the matter.

38.

Mr. Byrne

asked the Minister for Finance the present position in regard to plans for the introduction of decimal currency to the Republic.

39.

asked the Minister for Finance whether the change-over in Britain to decimal currency will be followed shortly by similar steps in this country; and whether the same breakdown of the £1 followed in Britain will obtain here.

40.

asked the Minister for Finance if it is the intention of the Government to introduce coins similar to those recently issued in Britain to inaugurate a decimal coinage system; and if he will make a statement on the present position of the proposed decimal coinage system.

I propose, with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, to take Questions Nos. 37, 38, 39 and 40 together.

I shall be referring to this matter in the statement I shall be making to the Dáil this afternoon.

41.

Mr. Byrne

asked the Minister for Finance if British 5d and 10d pieces now in circulation in Great Britain and Northern Ireland are legal tender in the Republic.

42.

asked the Minister for Finance if the new English decimal coins will be legal tender in this country.

I propose, with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, to take Questions Nos. 41 and 42 together.

As indicated in a statement which I issued on 18th April, 1968, the new British decimal coins are not legal tender in this country. In this respect, they are in the same position as existing British currency.
