Vol. 234 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - RTE Reception in Northern Ireland.

6.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs whether in any discussions with his opposite number in Stormont the question of RTE television being received in Northern Ireland was raised; and whether any extra stations to ensure clearer reception in Northern Ireland are planned.

The answer to both parts of the question is No. The Government of Northern Ireland have no function in relation to television. The frequencies and other characteristics of television stations in the European area are the subject of the European Broadcasting Agreement 1961 made in Stockholm in June, 1961, to which we are a party. In principle, the location and power of the transmitters permitted under the agreement are determined by the needs of each signatory to serve the area within its jurisdiction.
