Vol. 234 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Laois Speed Limit.

34.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware of the widespread dissatisfaction in regard to the removal of the speed limit at Cullohill, County Laois, on the main Dublin to Cork road; that fatal and serious accidents have taken place there in recent years; that a school which has over 140 children is convenient to this dangerous road; and that excessive speed through the village may result in loss of life; and if in compliance with the request of Laois County Council he will have this speed limit restored immediately.

The speed limit at Cullohill has not been removed; it has been raised to 50 m.p.h. as from 1st April, 1968. This is considered a more appropriate limit for the traffic conditions at the village and the decision to apply it was taken after consultation with the authorities concerned. I have not yet received the request of Laois County Council but I shall consider any such request; however, I cannot commit myself on the subject.

Statistics for the period from the 1st June, 1962, to date show there were only two recorded road accidents at Cullohill—neither of which involved personal injury.

Why not make it a race track?
