Vol. 234 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Naas Road Petrol Stations.

35.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he is aware of the growing number of petrol stations on the Naas Road, which add to the possibility of more accidents; and whether there are any further proposals for additional filling stations between Dublin and Naas.

I am aware that a recent survey undertaken by Dublin County Council indicated that the number of petrol filling and service stations on the Naas Road between the city boundary and the boundary of County Kildare is more than adequate for the normal needs of the travelling public. Following this survey the council decided at a meeting held on 12th February last that the revised draft development plan for County Dublin at present being prepared would include provisions for a complete prohibition on the erection of any additional petrol filling or service stations on the stretch of road in question and for stringent control on any other forms of frontage development which would interfere with the effective capacity of the road and with the safety and free flow of traffic on it.

I understand that there are at present no proposals before either Dublin or Kildare County Councils for additional filling or service stations on this road. Proposals for three developments fronting on to the dual carriageway near Rathcoole and each incorporating filling stations are at present the subject of appeals to me. I expect to make a decision on these appeals in the near future.
