Vol. 234 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Preservation of Scenic Area.

54.

(South Tipperary) asked the Minister for Lands if his attention has been drawn to the reported purchase by non-national interests of the Nire Valley lakes; and what positive steps can be taken to ensure that the natural amenities of this tourist area shall be preserved.

I have seen the reports referred to. The sale of rural lands to persons who are not qualified persons within the meaning of section 45 of the Land Act, 1965, would be subject to the consent of the Land Commission. So far no application for consent under the section has been received by the Land Commission in relation to the properties mentioned.

The preservation of amenities is primarily a matter for the planning authorities under the provisions of the Local Government (Planning and Development) Act, 1963. In this connection I would refer the Deputy to the reply given by the Minister for Local Government to questions on 1st inst. about the preservation of amenities in the Nire Valley area.
