asked the Minister for Finance the total amount of the national debt at the latest available date; the cost of servicing it; and if he will give similar figures for the years ended 31st March, 1956, and 31st March, 1967.

At 31st March, 1968, the national debt is provisionally estimated at £829 million. The amount required for the service of debt for the current financial year is estimated at £75 million.

At 31st March, 1956, the national debt was £309 million and the debt service in the following financial year was £20 million. At 31st March, 1967, the national debt was £771 million and the amount required to service it in 1967-68 is estimated at £64 million.
