Vol. 235 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Water Consumption.

22.

asked the Minister for Local Government the present daily consumption of water in the area supplied by Dublin Corporation; the estimated daily consumption in 1970 and 1975, the present water storage capacity; and what steps will be taken to increase the storage capacity to meet the anticipated increased usage of water.

I am informed by Dublin Corporation that the daily consumption of water in the area supplied by them is 43 million gallons. The likely daily consumption in 1970 and 1975 is estimated at 45 million and 50 million gallons respectively. Present water storage capacity totals to over 40 thousand million gallons. The corporation have no proposals for increasing this storage capacity.

Is the Minister satisfied that the present capacity will be adequate to serve the increased demand by the year 1975? If not, would he put into operation the necessary steps to ensure that in good time additional storage accommodation will be provided?

Dublin Corporation are satisfied that there is no problem in that regard.

Has the Minister any statistic readily available to his hand indicating what the appropriate water storage will be for the daily 50 million gallons storage, or would he say that a 40 million gallon water reservoir reservation would ordinarily prove adequate for the area in question?

I have not, but Dublin Corporation are satisfied that there is no problem in that regard, that the only problem is the problem of adequate treatment facilities, and plans are in preparation for these facilities.

Is the Minister aware that Dublin Corporation at the moment are refusing to give additional water supplies to other water authorities which they previously served, such as the Wicklow County Council, where building is delayed because of the inability of Dublin Corporation to supply the water it supplied up to now.

I am not so aware.
