Vol. 235 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - US Travel Restrictions.

12.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power what is the present position regarding the US restrictions on foreign spending and travel, and their likely consequences for Shannon Airport.

No restrictions on travel abroad have so far been brought into operation by the United States authorities. A Bill proposing the imposition of certain restrictions has been passed by the House of Representatives and has been sent to the United States Senate for consideration. The restrictions proposed are:

(a) a tax of 5 per cent on airline tickets purchased in the United States for foreign travel and

(b) a reduction from 100 dollars to 10 dollars in the amount of tax free goods which tourists can bring back to the United States from abroad.

In view of special efforts being made to develop business at Shannon to offset the effect of any US restrictions, I would hope that the restrictions will not have serious consequences for Shannon Airport.
