asked the Minister for Education if he is aware that the number of pupils on the roll at Shanagarry national school, County Cork, has increased from 45 to 97; and that the school is quite incapable of accommodating that number of pupils; when the overdue extension to the school will be carried out; and when it is intended to provide the third teacher.

I am aware of the substantial increase in enrolments at Shanagarry national school. My Department has already authorised the provision of a prefabricated classroom at this school to cater for the extra pupils. I understand that the relevant specifications are being prepared by the Commissioners of Public Works for issue to the Manager, with a view to the early invitation of tenders.
Immediately the extra room has been provided my Department will sanction the appointment of a third teacher at this school assuming, of course, that the appropriate average enrolments are maintained.
