Vol. 235 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Hotel and Restaurant Milk Prices.

82.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if, in view of the need to encourage the consumption of milk, he will take steps to control the price of milk in restaurants and hotels.

The answer is in the negative. Apart from any other considerations, the wide variations in charges made by different types of hotels and restaurants and the manner in which the commodity is served would make it impracticable for me to control milk prices in those establishments.

Is the Minister aware that a glass of milk, which is less than half a pint, is being charged for at the rate of 2/- in one prominent hotel in Dublin? Would he think that a normal price to charge?

The Deputy will appreciate that the prices charged for different comodities depend on the surroundings in which they are ordered. The price of milk as delivered to houses in Dublin is controlled, but if you choose to order a particular type of beverage in fairly exotic surroundings, I suppose you have to pay for the surroundings.
