Vol. 235 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Lifeguards on Dublin Beaches.

15.

asked the Minister for Local Government the number of lifeguards patrolling beaches in the Dublin city vicinity; and if he considers this staff adequate to ensure maximum protection for bathers.

I am informed by the sanitary authorities concerned that the number of lifeguards patrolling beaches in the Dublin city and Dún Laoghaire Corporation areas is 17. It is a matter for the appropriate sanitary authorities to determine the number of lifeguards required at beaches in their areas.

Has any survey been made to find out the appropriate number that would be required to ensure safe bathing for people?

It is a matter for the sanitary authorities concerned.

Would the Minister recommend that they look into this problem?

If the Deputy knows any members of the local authorities concerned, he could convey that suggestion to them.
