Vol. 235 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Weight Markings on Packaged Goods.

46.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce what legislative provisions are in force in respect of the marking of the weight of the contents on packaged goods which are sold; if he is satisfied that these provisions are being obeyed; and, if not, if he will take immediate steps to deal with this matter.

There are no provisions in existing legislation which require the marking of weight on packaged goods offered for sale. However, the Merchandise Marks Bill which I hope to introduce shortly will enable me, where I so decide, to make orders requiring that pre-packed goods be marked with the quantity of contents by weight, measure or number, and to prescribe standard quantities.
