Vol. 235 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Importation of Parrots.

67.

asked the Minister for Health if he will indicate the conditions under which the importation of parrots into this country is permitted.

Birds of the parrot species can only be imported into this country under permit granted by the Minister for Health.

In the case of private individuals the pertinent conditions regarding importation are that the health of the bird must be certified by a veterinary surgeon and, on importation, the bird must be quarantined for a period of three months, in one specified place, such as the owner's place of residence. During the period of quarantine, the bird must not be taken on to premises where poultry are kept or on to premises where there is an aviary.

Commercial importers, in addition to having veterinary clearance for any such birds, must arrange quarantine with the Royal Zoological Society of Ireland for a period of three months.

The statutory basis for the control of such imports is the Infectious Diseases (Amendment) Regulations, 1952.
