Vol. 237 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Road Freight Haulage.

25.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if he can give any information as to whether it is the intention of his Department to extend or abolish the present restricted 15-mile radius of non-licensed hauliers in the Republic.

Under the Road Transport Acts the areas within a 15mile radius of the GPO, Dublin and the principal post office at Cork and within a 10-mile radius of the principal post offices at Waterford, Limerick and Galway are exempt from the restrictions on carriage of merchandise for reward. There is no provision in existing legislation under which these areas could be altered.

I recently set up a study group to consider the desirability or otherwise of general long-term measures to liberalise road freight haulage for reward. When the group has furnished its final report to me I will be in a position to consider whether any action should be taken in relation to the present exempted areas.
