Vol. 237 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Urlingford (Kilkenny) Speed Limit.

51.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will introduce a speed limit on the main Dublin-Cork road at Longfordpass, Urlingford, for the safety of school children and other road users.

I understand that plans are in hand to improve this section of road; from an examination of the road conditions and the other relevant circumstances it appears that this is the only real solution to the traffic hazard. It is necessary to be very careful in the application of speed limits; applying one in the wrong circumstances would only tend to bring speed limits generally into disrepute. In this case, the facts before me to date do not indicate that a special speed limit could be relied on to reduce the accident rate; however, An Foras Forbartha have been asked to examine specially this and other particular cases where the accident record warrants it. I hope to have their report shortly.
