Vol. 237 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Tuam (Galway) Swimming Pool.

67.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he has received an application from Galway County Council for sanction for a loan to finance a swimming pool in Tuam; and, if so, when he proposes to sanction this loan.

68.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will give immediate approval to the loan to finance the erection of the swimming pool at Tuam by Galway County Council.

I propose, with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, to take Questions Nos. 67 and 68 together.

Galway County Council have been informed that in view of the necessity to conserve the resources of the Local Loans Fund for essential housing and sanitary services, the Minister for Finance is unable to agree to a loan being obtained from that source for the financing of the Tuam Swimming Pool.

The Council have also been told that a proposal to raise the loan from a source outside the Fund would be sympathetically considered.

In view of the fact that the Minister has already reduced the local contribution from £8,000 to £4,000 in this case, due to a deputation I led to him from Tuam, and in view of the fact that the local people will meet their commitments, will he now guarantee that if Galway County Council raise this loan from another source—and it is coming up at a meeting next Monday—he will sanction this work so that it can go ahead?

Yes, that is the gist of my reply.
